Exposed laval sequences from 1991 eruption at East Pacific Rise (1993)

Bathymetric complexity associated with the primary eruptive fissure of the 1991 eruption in the Axial Summit Trough (AST) of the East Pacific Rise (EPR) near 9°50'N. This photograph of the east side of the fissure shows exposed flow sequences that are 20-60 cm thick separated by fragmented lava crusts. The biomarkers (57 and 58) are 45 cm by 30 cm. The scale across the bottom of the photo is approximately 6 m. Photo is frame-grabbed high-definition image (courtesy of W. Lange, WHOI, and R. Lutz, Rutgers University).
