The latest advances in computational science now allow resolutions at sub 1-km scales as shown in this zoom-in of the New Hebrides and Tonga slabs in a global model of mantle flow. Such models incorporate laboratory-based rheology models, assimilate data at a variety of scales and can made predictions in deformation and state of stress at fines scales while also predicting global plate motions.
